Completed Research Projects

The following is a list of the research projects completed over the past five years.

Étude comparative du fonctionnement des transporteurs sodium-calcium provenant du tissu musculaire et nerveux (October 2009) [Comparative study of sodium/calcium exchangers from muscle and nerve tissue]: The sodium and calcium channels in the heart, brain and muscles have the same function of balancing the cellular concentration of sodium and calcium. However, depending on the tissue in which they are found, their sensitivity to their environment changes. This study compares the genes encoding these channels in order to better understand the subtleties in their regulation and the function of the protein involved in cardiovascular disease.

Enquête sur la santé des jeunes adultes franco-manitobains vivant en situation linguistique minoritaire (2006) [Survey of the health of young Franco-Manitoban adults living in a minority situation]: The survey explores the risk behaviours that can negatively affect the health of the young adults attending Université de Saint-Boniface. The goal of this project was to take stock of the situation in order to more effectively prevent unhealthy lifestyles. The results were used to raise young adults’ awareness of some prevalent behaviours, such as alcohol use, drinking and driving, and speeding. Furthermore, recommendations were made to the community health centre and student counselling services to help them better address students’ needs.

À la recherche de solutions durables : une étude de cas au Costa Rica examinant l'apprentissage au moyen de la participation de la population à la planification et aux opérations de gestion de l'eau dans le cadre du programme agricole d'ICE (2008) [Looking for sustainable solutions: a case study from Costa Rica that examines learning through community-based participation in watershed management planning and operations as part of the ICE (Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad) agricultural  program]: An interdisciplinary PhD project in the environmental studies field focused on raising environmental awareness and adult learning in informal contexts. The project promoted sustainable development by involving marginalized voices in the decisions affecting them. The researcher adopted an educational approach to create, organize and lead a participatory process in order to assess the environmental impact of an agricultural conservation program for Costa Rican communities.
